Ema Datshi - Bhutan’s Fiery Chilli & Cheese Delight!
Ema Datshi is the national dish of Bhutan, known for its bold, spicy, and creamy flavors. The word Ema means chilli, and Datshi refers to cheese, making this a deliciously simple yet flavorful dish. It is commonly served with red or white rice and is a staple in Bhutanese households.
Ingredients
- 6-8 large green chilies (or red chillies for variation), sliced lengthwise
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
- 2 cups water
- 2 tbsp butter (optional for richness)
- 100g datshi (traditional Bhutanese cheese) or substitutes (feta, mozzarella, or cream cheese)
- Salt to taste
- ½ tsp black pepper (optional)
Directions
- Prepare the Ingredients- Wash and slice the chilies lengthwise. If you prefer less heat, remove the seeds. Thinly slice the onion and mince the garlic.
- Cook the Base- In a pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the chilies, onions, garlic, and tomatoes. Let it cook over medium heat for 5-7 minutes until the chilies soften.
- Add the Cheese- Lower the heat and gradually add the datshi (or cheese substitute). Stir gently to let the cheese melt into a creamy consistency. Add salt and black pepper to taste.
- Final Touch- Stir in butter (optional) for extra richness. Simmer for another 2-3 minutes until everything is well combined. Remove from heat and let it rest for a minute before serving.
